Fortified Foods

Did you know you were taking supplements?

Well, if you drink milk, eat cereals, etc., you are technically taking supplements in the form of “fortified foods”. Fortified foods are foods/beverages that have a vitamin or mineral added to improve the nutritional quality of the food supply and to provide a public health benefit with minimal risk to health.  Examples of fortified foods are milk (added vitamin A and vitamin D), salt (added iodine), cereal (added folic acid), bread (added niacin), tap water (added fluoride), to name the most popular ones.  The FDA added vitamin D as a GRAS (generally recognized as safe) food additive and regulates the amounts that may be added to foods. See read more here articles below for more information.  So be aware that if you are consuming a fortified food, you are taking added vitamins and minerals that may or may not normally be found in that food.
